What affects your price

  • Vehicle size, from a compact car up to a lifted truck or large SUV
  • Overall paint condition and how dull or spotted the finish is
  • How heavy the road film, brake dust, and contamination buildup is
  • Whether the paint needs full clay or chemical decontamination
  • Wheel, tire, and lower-body grime that takes extra time to safely remove

Pricing shown is an honest best estimate for the Modesto area, not a binding quote. Every car is different, so photos get you a ballpark, and seeing it at the Riverbank shop gets you the real number. Call or text and we will set up a time that suits you. Estimates are always free.

An exterior detail is a lot more than a car wash. By the time most Central Valley cars come to us, the paint is carrying a season's worth of road film, hard-water spots, brake dust, bug splatter, and a fine grit of bonded contaminants you can feel but not see. A real exterior detail strips all of that away, decontaminates the clear coat, and leaves a protected finish that is genuinely smooth and bright again. You bring your car to our Riverbank shop, we do it by hand, and you drive away with paint that looks cared for instead of just rinsed off.

What an Exterior Detail Actually Removes

Your paint takes a beating out here. Drive Highway 99 or McHenry Avenue for a few weeks and the clear coat collects a layer of bonded road film, dust off the orchards and fields, brake dust baked onto the wheels, tar, sap from street trees, and the calcium spots that hard Central Valley water leaves behind when sprinklers or a quick rinse dry in the sun. None of that comes off with a normal soap-and-water wash, which is exactly why a car can look dull right after you wash it.

An exterior detail attacks all of it in the right order. We safely lift the loose dirt first so it never gets dragged across your paint, then we deep-clean the wheels, tires, and wheel wells where grime hides, and then we decontaminate the actual paint surface so it is chemically and physically clean. Run your hand over a freshly detailed panel and it feels like glass instead of fine sandpaper. That smoothness is the bonded contamination being gone.

The finishing work is what makes it look bright instead of just clean. We dress the tires and trim, clean the glass inside and out of the exterior side, and lay down a layer of protection so the freshly cleaned paint actually beads water and resists the next round of dust and film. The difference is a car that reads as well-kept, not one that is simply less dirty than it was.

How Vanish Does It, By Hand

Everything is done by hand at our shop, never run through an automatic tunnel. Automatic washes are the single biggest cause of the swirl marks and spider-webbing you see under sunlight, because stiff brushes and recycled grit drag across your clear coat on every pass. We use the two-bucket method, dedicated wash mitts, and grit guards so the dirt we pull off your paint ends up on the floor and not back on the panel.

We work clean to dirty and top to bottom, saving the filthiest areas like the lower rockers and wheels for last so nothing cross-contaminates. Wheels and tires get their own dedicated brushes and cleaners, because mixing wheel grime into your paint wash is how a lot of damage happens. Where the paint has bonded fallout that washing alone will not release, we clay or otherwise decontaminate the surface so the finish is truly smooth before any protection goes on.

Kevin Borden, the owner, runs this the same way he runs every paintless dent repair: carefully, by hand, and with an honest read on what your car actually needs. A daily driver that just needs the film knocked off gets a different scope than a car you are about to sell, and we will tell you which one you are looking at instead of upselling you into work that will not change the result.

Why It Is Worth Doing Right

The biggest payoff is protecting what you have already paid for. Your clear coat is a thin, finite layer, and once bonded contaminants and embedded grit sit on it, every careless wash grinds them in and wears it down. A proper exterior detail removes that abrasive load and adds a sacrificial layer of protection, so the paint underneath stays healthy longer. Healthy paint is what keeps a car from looking ten years old at five.

It also shows up at resale and trade-in time. A buyer or an appraiser forms an opinion in the first few seconds, and a bright, swirl-free finish with clean wheels and crisp trim signals a car that was maintained. That impression is worth real money against a comparable car with dull, spotted paint, and an exterior detail is one of the cheapest ways to earn it.

Day to day, a protected finish is simply easier to live with. Water sheets off instead of spotting, dust and bug splatter rinse away with far less effort, and the next wash takes a fraction of the work. You are not just buying a clean car for today, you are making the car easier to keep clean for months.

Signs Your Car Is Ready for One

The clearest tell is the feel test. Wash and dry a panel, then slide your fingertips lightly across it. If it feels gritty, rough, or like fine sandpaper, that is bonded contamination sitting on your clear coat, and a normal wash will never remove it. That car is a textbook candidate for a full exterior detail with decontamination.

Other signs are easy to spot once you know them: water that no longer beads and instead sheets flat and leaves spots, a finish that looks hazy or flat even right after washing, white or chalky mineral spots from hard water and sprinklers, brake dust crusted onto the wheels, or tar and sap specks down the lower body and rockers. Any one of those means washing alone has stopped keeping up.

Timing matters too. If you are about to list the car for sale, just got back from a long road trip or a dusty stretch of farm roads, or simply have not gone past a quick rinse in a long time, an exterior detail resets the finish to a clean baseline that is then far easier to maintain with regular hand washes.

When an Exterior Detail Is Not the Fix

We will be straight with you about what an exterior detail does and does not do. It cleans, decontaminates, and protects the surface, but it is not paint correction. If your clear coat is full of deep swirls, scratches, or oxidation that you can catch a fingernail in, those need machine polishing to actually remove, not a wash and seal. We will tell you when that is what you are really seeing so you are not disappointed.

It is also not a body repair. Chips, cracks, peeling clear coat, rust, and dents are outside what a detail can address. If the real issue is a dent or ding, that is paintless dent repair, the work we are known for, and we would rather point you to the right service than have you pay for a detail that cannot touch the problem. Cracked or failing clear coat in particular cannot be sealed back to life, and we will say so.

And the protection an exterior detail lays down is a wax or sealant layer, which is real but temporary. If you want protection measured in years rather than months, a swirl-resistant surface, and the easiest possible upkeep, that is a ceramic coating, which is a separate service built on a corrected, decontaminated finish. An exterior detail is the right call for routine renewal and protection; it is not a substitute for correction or coating when those are what the car actually needs.

Local to the Central Valley

Central Valley driving is hard on paint in ways that stack up fast. Relentless Modesto sun bakes contamination onto the clear coat, dust off the surrounding orchards and farm roads coats every panel, hard water from sprinklers and quick rinses leaves chalky mineral spots, and the brake dust and road film off Highway 99 and McHenry Avenue bond to the finish. Cars that park outside all day, which is most of them here, take the worst of it. You bring the car to us, and an exterior detail at our Riverbank shop resets all of that and leaves the paint protected against the next round.

Truly Clean, Not Just Rinsed

Decontamination removes the bonded film and grit a normal wash leaves behind, so the paint is smooth and bright instead of dull and spotted.

Protects Your Clear Coat

Lifting the abrasive grime and sealing the finish keeps your thin clear coat healthy, which is what keeps the car from looking older than it is.

Easier to Keep Clean

A protected finish sheets water and shrugs off dust and bugs, so spotting drops and every future wash takes a fraction of the effort.

How Exterior Detailing Works

  1. 1

    Inspect and Pre-Rinse

We walk the paint with you, note the trouble spots, then pre-rinse and apply a foam to soften and lift the loose dirt so it is never dragged across your clear coat.

  2. 2

    Wheels, Tires, and Wells

Using dedicated brushes and cleaners, we clean the wheels, tires, and wheel wells first, because that is where the heaviest brake dust and grime live and we do not want it touching your paint.

  3. 3

    Hand Wash

We hand wash with the two-bucket method and a clean mitt, working top to bottom and clean to dirty so the grit comes off the car instead of swirling it back in.

  4. 4

    Decontaminate

Where the paint still feels rough after washing, we clay or chemically decontaminate the surface to release bonded road film, fallout, and mineral spots until it is glass-smooth.

  5. 5

    Protect and Finish

We dry safely, apply a layer of wax or sealant so the finish beads water and resists film, then dress the tires and trim and clean the exterior glass for a bright, finished look.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Exterior Deep Clean starts at $145 and moves up mainly with the size of your vehicle and how much buildup the paint is carrying. A compact car that just needs the film knocked off sits at the lower end, while a large truck or SUV with heavy brake dust, hard-water spots, and bonded contamination that needs full decontamination takes more time and materials. Text over a few photos of the paint, or call and we will get you scheduled for a look in Riverbank. The estimate is honest, free, and comes before any work starts.

Most exterior details run a couple of hours, depending on the size of the vehicle and how much decontamination the paint needs. A straightforward car is quicker; a large or heavily contaminated vehicle takes longer because we are doing it by hand and not rushing it. When you book we will tell you roughly how long yours will take, so you can decide whether to drop it off or wait nearby.

A car wash rinses off loose surface dirt. An exterior detail removes what a wash cannot: the bonded road film, brake dust, tar, sap, and mineral spots that stay stuck to your clear coat and make paint feel rough and look dull. We hand wash with the two-bucket method to avoid the swirl marks automatic tunnels cause, decontaminate the surface until it is smooth, and seal it with protection. The result feels and looks completely different from a wash, and it lasts.

The wax or sealant we apply typically protects the finish for a few months, depending on how the car is stored, how often it is washed, and how much sun and weather it sees. Maintaining it with regular gentle hand washes stretches that out. If you want protection measured in years instead of months, with a harder, swirl-resistant surface, ask us about a ceramic coating, which is a separate service built on a properly prepped finish.

An exterior detail cleans, decontaminates, and protects, but it does not correct the paint. Light haze can look better once the surface is clean and sealed, but deep swirls, scratches you can catch a fingernail in, and oxidation need machine polishing or paint correction to actually remove. We will tell you honestly what you are looking at when we inspect the car, so you know whether a detail will get you the result you want or whether correction is the real fix.

All of our detailing is done at our shop at 2809 Patterson Rd in Riverbank, where we have the controlled space, water, and lighting to do it right.
