Headlight Restoration

Modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate, a tough, lightweight plastic that replaced glass decades ago. From the factory it comes with a thin UV-protective clear coat. That coat is the only thing standing between your lens and the sun, and in the Central Valley the sun wins. Our long, hot summers and high UV index break that coating down faster here than in milder climates.

Once the factory coating fails, the polycarbonate itself starts to oxidize. The surface micro-pits, traps dirt and road film, and scatters light instead of letting it pass through cleanly. That is the milky, yellow haze you see. It is not dirt you can wash off, it is the lens surface itself breaking down, and it only gets worse until the lens is treated or replaced.

The result is more than cosmetic. A hazed lens can cut your usable light output dramatically, which matters most exactly when you need it, on a dark stretch of country road or merging onto Highway 99 at night. Restoring the lens restores that light.

Restoration is a multi-stage refresh of the lens itself, not a wipe-on product. We cut away the damaged, oxidized outer layer in stages, then refinish and re-seal the surface so it is clear again and protected against the next round of sun. Done correctly, the lens looks factory-fresh and the clarity lasts.

The key is the final seal. A quick polish alone will look great for a few weeks and then yellow right back, because the protective layer was never replaced. We finish every restoration with a dedicated UV sealant so the work holds up, which is the difference between a parking-lot special and a repair that lasts.

A pair of replacement headlight assemblies can run anywhere from a couple hundred dollars for a common economy car to well over a thousand for a newer vehicle with projector or LED units, before installation. Restoration is a small fraction of that and keeps your original, correctly-aimed housings in place.

We will always tell you honestly when restoration is the right call and when it is not. If a lens is cracked, has moisture trapped inside the housing, or the reflector behind it has failed, no amount of surface work will fix that, and we will point you toward replacement instead of taking your money for a repair that will not hold. Most hazed headlights, though, are perfect candidates for restoration.

Clear headlights are a safety upgrade you can see the first night you drive. More of your bulb's output actually reaches the road, so you spot hazards, lane lines, and wildlife sooner. For a lot of our customers that alone is worth it.

There is a cosmetic payoff too. Foggy headlights are one of the first things that make a car read as old or neglected, even when the paint and body are clean. Clearing them up is one of the cheapest ways to make a vehicle look years newer, which matters if you are getting ready to sell or trade it in.
